Less than most people think. A VTC licence may be obtained by either an individual or a company, provided that the applicant meets the general requirements for transport operators set by the autonomous community’s transport authority:
- Be up to date with tax, employment and Social Security obligations.
- Meet the good character requirement (not have certain penalties or a criminal record that would prevent this).
- Have a registered vehicle that meets the conditions applicable in that autonomous community, with the relevant insurance.
Unlike other transport licences, a professional competence certificate is not generally required for a VTC licence, which significantly lowers the barrier to entry for investors.
Please note: the buyer must meet the requirements at the time of transfer, and this is where private transfers often run into difficulties. In a supervised transfer, we review the purchaser’s position during the due diligence phase, before the application is submitted to the authorities — to ensure it is submitted correctly the first time. The full process is outlined in how it works.
