Does the VTC licence expire? Renewal and reinstatement

A VTC licence does not expire due to age: it does not have an expiry date like a driving licence. What it does have is a periodic review — the renewal, generally every two years — and that is where a licence can truly be revoked: if the renewal is not completed on time, the authorities may declare the authorisation to have lapsed. The entire asset vanishes because of a single administrative procedure.

How the cycle works in practice:

• Valid renewal. The transport authority checks that the authorisation still meets the requirements: valid insurance, tax and social security obligations up to date, and the registered vehicle in good condition. If successful, the licence continues as normal.
• Renewal not passed or submitted late. The licence is at direct risk of expiry. There are reinstatement mechanisms available in certain circumstances and within subsequent timeframes, but these are limited and subject to a strict timetable: every month of inaction works against you. If you find yourself in this situation, take action immediately and seek advice — the specific deadlines depend on current regulations and your region, so check them for your particular case.
• Expiry confirmed. End of the licence’s validity: there is no licence to sell or lease.

For the buyer, the implication is simple: a licence with an expired endorsement is a red light until it is clarified whether reinstatement is possible and what status it would have. It is not necessarily a dead deal — sometimes it presents an opportunity involving a discount and some legal work — but you should never pay the price of a valid licence without first carrying out this analysis.
