Costs

Apart from the price, how much does the transfer itself cost?

The licence fee is the biggest expense, but not the only one. You should also budget for:

  • Transfer taxes. Depending on who is selling: VAT (21 per cent) if the seller is a business owner or practising professional, or ITP if it is a transfer between private individuals, with the rate varying by autonomous community. If you are buying the holding company, the rules are different. This is the area where we have seen the most costly mistakes: always check this applies to your specific situation (during a supervised closing, the due diligence team will review it).
  • Administrative fees for the change of ownership with the transport authority: a small amount, varying by autonomous community.
  • Administrative agency or consultancy, if you’re going it alone: someone has to prepare a file that gets approved first time round. Corrective measures are the number one reason why a traditional transfer can take up to 8 weeks.
  • Brokerage fees. Those at VTC360 are published in how it works — no surprises at the end.

Rule of thumb: set aside a buffer of 5–10 per cent on top of the agreed price for taxes and closing costs, and confirm the exact figure before paying the deposit, not afterwards.

The living price reference is the VTC licence price index: by province and month by month, with sample and source.
